Caleb couldn’t believe she’d said yes. She had lots of secrets, and he wondered about where she was living most of all.

The other good thing about Haskell’s Diner was the fact they were fast. It wasn’t long before he was watching Josie inhale a super-sized breakfast of eggs, sausage, toast, and hash browns.

He’d ordered the same, and was happy to fill his face while observing her. She was still tense, and he didn’t know if it was because of what had happened earlier or due to things she was concealing.

She talked a lot when she was nervous, and she brought up several ideas for organizing the office, and he just kept nodding and shoveling food into his mouth.

She’s a hurricane. A tsunami when it came to orderliness and structure. It was exactly the kind of thing that should’ve scared him. Instead, he felt like he should run head first into her.

That did scare him. He didn’t do long-term relationships, hadn’t even thought about a steady girlfriend in years.

When she was done, she pushed her plate aside, a single triangle of toast in one corner. “That was delicious.”

“Thought you might like it. Hopefully all that salt and grease will help us figure out how to catch Dover today.”

“I’m hitting the restroom. Let’s get coffee to go. We can clean up and hunt down Glen.”

He hailed the waitress as Josie left the booth. While he waited for the two drinks, he called Danny about the disability checks. “Our new office manager says she hasn’t gotten any in two months,” he told his friend. “Check on them, will you? Probably lost in the mail, but she needs that money.”

Danny owed him big time and assured Caleb he would follow-up and get back to him as soon as he could.

“Thanks, man.”

Annoyance ate at him. The story she’d told him swirled in his mind. Someone who should be considered a hero was struggling to make ends meet.

Josie came out, face washed and hair combed. The coffees were delivered and Josie picked up both as Caleb paid and they took off for the office.
